Political parties in Baránok, no. 5: CDA/Liberals

12/08/2021

I don't know why, but I decided to bring this series back after a year. Today, we will talk about the Conservative Democratic Alliance, later renamed to the Liberal Party.

Establishment and first days

The Conservative Democratic Alliance was established on 24 March 2020, one day after Połiak-Baránok was dissolved. The direct predecessor of the CDA were the Social Democrats of P-B. The founding members of the CDA, T.L. and Imrich Kvajda, were originally a members of the SDs, but decided to dissolve the party. T.L. was elected as the CDA's first President. The name was coined by Kvajda, who, although the obvious liberal orientation of the new party, wanted the party to have a name which sounded "strong". The party's dominance in the newborn Fourth Republic was sealed after T.L. was elected to the post of the Head (with Kvajda being his deputy) of the Transitional State Council, forming the First Government of T.L.

More success and the Second Government of T.L.

On 3 April 2020, presidential election were held in Baránok, with Imrich Kvajda winning by a landslide, which meant he had to leave his party. The membership of the CDA was thus reduced to three, but was still the most powerful party in Baránok, confirming it in the parliamentary election on 7 April 2020, where the party formed a coalition with Drunk and Corrupt and T.L. became Prime Minister. On 22 April 2020, Imrich Kvajda stepped down from the post of President, having received significant criticism for establishing a party during his term. A.H. was named as CDA's candidate, winning as parliament elected the new President, and was sworn in on 24 April. He, however, didn't leave his party, which meant CDA had nearly absolute power in Baránok. The Second Government of T.L. made many reforms and passed many new bills, being labeled by some as the "best government in Baranese history".

In opposition with new name

On 5 July 2020, another election was held in Baránok. The CDA lost by only one vote and thus became the opposition in the Federal Assembly. They were very active and were critical of the new government of K.Č. being inactive. A.H. left the party on 13 July 2020 and re-established the People's Alliance. On 8 August, Oľga Bebečková left the party, leaving T.L. as the sole member. He renamed CDA to the Liberal Party, switched to be more left-leaning and began a strong cooperation with Kvajda's Social Democratic Party, which was also in parliamentary opposition.

Merge with the SDP

On 3 December 2020, the party merged with the SDP, forming the Democratic Party, which later participated in the 2020 Baranese coup d'état and later joined the Democratic Union of Baránok. T.L. also became the PM for the third and final time after the coup, defeating K.Č.
